2 cloves garlic, minced (optional but adds great flavor)
-
1 large egg
-
½ cup plain breadcrumbs (or crushed saltine crackers for old-school flavor)
-
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
1 tbsp ketchup or BBQ sauce
-
1 tsp Dijon or yellow mustard
-
1 tsp kosher salt
-
½ tsp freshly ground black pepper

½ tsp paprika

Additional salt & pepper for the outside of the patties

Sliced tomatoes

Instructions
1. Prepare the Meat Mixture
-
In a large mixing bowl, combine:
-
ground beef
-
minced onion
-
garlic
-
egg
-
breadcrumbs
-
Worcestershire sauce
-
ketchup
-
mustard
-
salt, pepper, paprika
-
-
Use your hands or a wooden spoon to gently mix until just combined.
Do not overmix—this keeps the burgers tender instead of tough.
2. Shape the Patties
-
Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions for large burgers (or 6 smaller ones).
-
Lightly dampen your hands to prevent sticking.
-
Form each portion into a patty about ¾ inch (2 cm) thick.
-
Press a shallow thumbprint in the center of each patty—this helps them cook evenly and prevents puffing up.
3. Cook the Burgers
You can use a skillet, grill pan, outdoor grill, or even a flat-top.
Stovetop Method (Mom’s Classic Way)
-
Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
-
Season patties lightly on both sides with additional salt & pepper right before cooking.
-
Place patties into the hot skillet without overcrowding.
-
Cook 5–6 minutes per side, depending on thickness and desired doneness.
-
If adding cheese, place a slice on each patty during the last minute and cover the skillet to melt.
Signs They’re Done
-
Juices run clear.
-
Internal temp reaches 160°F (71°C) for well-done (traditional “mom style”).
-
Slightly pink inside is okay if you prefer medium (145–155°F).
4. Toast the Buns
While burgers rest, toast buns lightly in the pan with a small dab of butter until golden.
5. Build Your Burgers
Layer buns with:
-
Mayo or ketchup
-
Lettuce
-
Tomatoes
-
Patties
-
Onions and pickles
-
Extra sauce on top bun
Serve hot with fries, chips, or a simple green salad.
Tips for the Best “Mom Style” Burger
-
80/20 ground beef makes a huge difference in flavor and juiciness.
-
Grating the onion makes it melt into the meat without chunks.
-
Breadcrumbs + egg act like a gentle binder, giving that old-fashioned, tender texture.
-
Don’t flatten the burgers with the spatula—you’ll squeeze out the juices.
-
Let patties rest for 3–4 minutes before serving so the juices don’t run out.
Optional Variations
-
Mom’s BBQ Burger: Add ¼ cup BBQ sauce to the mixture.
-
Spicy Version: Add ½–1 tsp chili powder or a dash of hot sauce.
-
Herb Burger: Mix in chopped parsley or green onions.
-
Cheddar-Stuffed: Insert a cube of cheddar in the center of each patty before cooking.
